Day 1
Welcome on arrival at Trelew airport and transfer to Puerto Pirámides, a 150-km-away small tourist village within Península Valdés Nature Reserve. Meet guide to review medical information, check on the equipment and answer any questions. After a tasty breakfast, we head down to the beach to get on board a semi-rigid inflatable boat for our Southern right whale watching experience. Back from the hour-and-a-half navigation trip, we get set for the hike. After walking on the beach for a while, we continue on the edge of the cliffs that offer stunning views of the gulf while the whales thrill us with their presence every now and then. From the steep cliffs, we head into the heart of the steppe, simply on the path of guanacos, and we find an array of sand dunes built by the wind. We walk on the side of the 1-km-long dune formation and continue our trek towards Punta Pardelas. From there on, cormorants, South American terns, oystercatchers and other shore- and seabirds delight us as we walk. Punta Pardelas is the spot chosen for lunch by the sea. In the afternoon, a vehicle drives us to El 39, a small beach on Golfo San José where we set up our base camp. Beach El 39 is a research area for Southern Right whales for which the ICB, a local whale conservation organization reporting to the Whale Conservation Institute and Ocean Alliance, is responsible. We pay a visit to the scientist that work there and to their field lab. Once the camp is set, time allows for a trek to a close-by clifftop viewing point from where we take pleasure in sighting the Southern right whales. And for dinner…feast on traditional Patagonian lamb cooked over an open fire while we gather on the beach around the fire.
Meals: lunch, dinner.
Day 2
FA nutritious breakfast is the start of our trekking day. As we walk along an immense stretch of sandy beach escorted by impressive cliffs, we encounter bones and skeletons of stranded whales and an excellent variety of seashells. At the end of this 5-km-long beach we reach a site of particular interest that boasts a huge concentration of marine fossils dating back million years. After hydrating our bodies and rejoicing at the magnificent landscape, we head North to Punta Conos, named after the cone-like hillocks that we will go across. The trails on the edge of the cliffs afford spectacular views of the Gulf waters as the whales playfully jump and display their majestic tales. At some places, coastal features allow viewing whales as close as a few meters away. We enter the field on guanaco trails, where we are likely to spot herds of these animals, and we avoid some ravines to eventually reach Punta Conos and get to El puente -the bridge- a maritime rock formation that is a mandatory stop for pictures. The wind blowing on the dunes uncovers and covers back again ancient Tehuelche settlements that existed along the Patagonian coast allowing us to recognize elements used by the natives and to see the places where they used to eat. At a nearby pebble stone beach we stop for lunch by the sea, seconded by a few curious sea lions that approach us as a welcome. Before returning to El 39, we visit a single hair sea lion colony, distant 1 kilometer from our lunch site, tide permitting. In El 39, we meet the vehicle that drives us back to Puerto Pirámides for our farewell dinner. Overnight stay at Eco Lodge Puerto Pirámides.
