Vessel
Originally built for the United States agency NOAA (National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration), the USHUAIA has been refurbished to accommodate a maximum of 84 passengers in 41 comfortable twin cabins and suites. The ice-strengthened polar vessel USHUAIA is very well appointed and provides ample deck space and an open bridge policy. The full complement of inflatable landing craft ensures superb landings and wildlife viewing opportunities on the otherwise inaccessible coastline. All cabins include a desk and ample storage space. Public areas feature a large dining room (one sitting), an observation lounge and bar, a conference room with modern multimedia equipment, a well-stocked library, a changing room and a small infirmary. Our expert captain, officers and crew are highly experienced in Antarctic navigation and have a great love of nature. We provide a specialist team of international expedition leaders and lecturers, all extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, helpful and dedicated to the protection of the environment. Our chefs prepare excellent cuisine including many local specialties and the bar is well-stocked with carefully selected wines and spirits.

Climate
Most precipitation in coastal areas falls as snow, but is highly variable depending on location. The bulk of the precipitation comes from the cyclonic storms that diverge into the interior from the ocean, mainly during the winter. Heavy snowfalls occur when these cyclonic storms pick up moisture from the surrounding seas. This moisture freezes and is deposited as snow as it moves inland. In areas which are farther north, long periods of continual sunshine occur during the summer, with sunrises and sunsets occurring during much of the rest of the year.

The Antarctic Peninsula
The Antarctic Peninsula extends much further north than the rest of the continent and is characterized by a warmer and wetter climate than the coastal areas, with above-freezing temperatures common. In many locations, especially at the northern end, rain is as common as snow. Here, life is more prevalent than any other region of the continent. Birds and marine mammals nest and breed on the rocky shores; while inland, pockets of vegetation are found, mostly in the form of grasses, lichens, and mosses. However, the peninsula also experiences some of the continent's strongest winds and fiercest storms. Sustained westerlies and gales can buffet the peninsula for days or even weeks on end, producing bone-numbing wind-chills and mountainous seas..

Time
GMT -3.

Currency
The local currency is the peso. One euro is about 4 pesos and one Usd is about 3 pesos. It is not necessary to travel with a lot of cash (pesos or dollars). Visa, MasterCard or American express are accepted everywhere.

Customs
To enter the country, only a passport is needed.

Health
Nothing is compulsory concerning vaccination. Being vaccinate against Hepatitis B is recommended. And an important point: do not drink water of the tap.

Food
Argentina is well known for its wines, produced mainly in the province of Mendoza, near The Andes, and… the beef! Ask for a "bife de chorizo" or "lomo"! In Patagonia, try the lamb barbecue, a trout from the lakes and a Pacific salmon.
If you are vegetarian, don't worry, Argentina is a great fruit and vegetable producer, you will find variety and quality at very low prices.
